This was nowhere near as good as I was hoping. It had its moments, but overall it was a disappointment.
I was expecting real gender-bending, and instead I got gender-bending for theatrical/performance purposes. It also seems like it's trying to be a 1930s-era film - like the original Viktor und Viktoria movie - but it ends up being campy in a bad way. I'd like to see the original 1933 movie, but it is hard to find - and it's only in German, no subtitles. So much for that! I was also not impressed by the show numbers in this movie, which are not as well-done as Cabaret or Moulin Rouge. I suppose it's possible that the 1995 release of Victor/Victoria, which was a filmed version of the Broadway show, is better in this regard...but I'm not going to bother to rent it.
So I looked up some other films that contain cross-dressing, in the hopes of finding something else to add to my Netflix queue. I picked Baran and Osama, both of which feature Afghan girls who dress as boys. I was quite surprised that Netflix doesn't have Yentl, I thought it was enough of a classic to be included but apparently not...too bad, because I've never seen it and would really like to. I added Rent because I didn't get to see it in theaters, and I have no idea what the show's plot is about, so I want to see it.
[this is good] In my opinion here someone has gone in cycles
